Liz, Illusion, Caroline, Hendrix, Sarah & Tex – West Sussex

On the hottest day of the year so far, I took a little trip down to West Sussex to meet three lovely ladies and their equine friends.

Liz wanted to book a shoot for her and her beautiful girl, Illusion. Illusion is a twenty-three years-young grey mare, out of an Irish Draught mare, by a Lipizzaner stallion, named Maestoso Montenegro.

Liz first set eyes on Illusion when she was just a two year-old filly, when she was on a hacking holiday in Exmoor. She was due to be sold, but the buyer never turned up and the owners kept her. Three years later, Liz became her proud owner!

The pair have now been together for seventeen years and Liz tells me that Illusion is a fantastic little mare, despite being a little ‘hot’ at times. “She is my stress buster,” she says. And Illusion has just recently added another string to her bow and is teaching Liz’s young son to ride.

Caroline and Hendrix were next to join us on our shoot. Hendrix is a seven year-old Thoroughbred. He raced when he was two years-old, running eleven times and winning just once, bless him.

Caroline has owned Hendrix since three days before his fifth birthday and says that he’s a very laid back chap, which certainly showed on his shoot. He wasn’t phased by anything we asked of him, although Caroline was on the look out for rogue cows, as that’s his pet hate and apparently they roam in the areas we were shooting, lol.

And last but not least, I met Sarah and Tex. The big coloured, Tex, is a ten year-old Irish Sports Horse and has been with Sarah for three years. This pair are currently competing at novice level in BD and are aiming towards elementary.

Sarah describes Tex as a ‘loveable rogue’ and tells me that he has a strong, sensitive character, having no problem expressing himself when he disagrees with her. Lol. She says that despite his skills in the dressage arena, his favourite past time is hacking out and stealing any Cow Parsley within reach, en route.

Thank you so much, ladies, for a lovely day. It was a beautiful setting to spend the warmest day of the year and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting you all!
