When you arrive at somebody’s home for a shoot and you’re greeted with an eleven week old black Labrador puppy, who covers your face in puppy-breath kisses, you know it’s going to be a good day at the office!!
Jess’s mum, Liz had purchased a photoshoot gift voucher from me, at Christmas. So, last week I paid a visit to Jess, at her family’s home, for a shoot with her stunning, bay Connemara pony, Rodney.
This little pony is an absolute angel. I have a confession to make; I used to have a Connemara when I was a teenager and she was such an absolute terror that she put me off of the breed for life. But I am pleased to admit that Rodney totally obliterated my preconceptions, the other evening.
Rodney is just like a great big puppy dog! You know when you just meet a pony and they have nothing but kindness in their eye? That’s Rodney. He was willing and patient and so, so sweet. He was feeling asleep on Jess’s shoulder when they were getting him ready and we had a lovely cuddle whilst Jess changed her outfit. I just wanted to stuff him into the boot of my car and take him home to live in my garden.
Having had a variety of mountain and moorland ponies, and having been showing for many years, Jess bought Rodney last October, when she had grown out of the smaller breeds she’d previously owned. He is quite a little star, having been to Horse of the Year Show last year and Jess is now enjoying her first season with him, getting to know him inside and out of the ring.
Jess and Liz’s home is so idyllic. They look out of their back door to see Rodney’s irresistible little face peering back over his stable door, or from his field, and they have beautiful surrounding gardens, orchard and paddocks. We also persuaded Jess’s older sister, Katie, to join us for a few shots and I was super excited to have Bonnie, the puppy, included, too. I almost melted when she started enthusiastically licking Rodney’s nose. He looked so unsure but was so gentle with her.
Thank you for a lovely evening, Jess, Liz, Katie and family. It was lovely to meet you all.
