Ella, Nigel & Rufus – Equine Maternity Photography, Suffolk

Equine Maternity Photography, Suffolk: Ella Souster & Mr. Nigel - Sophie Callahan Photography

At the beginning of the week I had quite an unusual, but beautiful shoot and something a little different. In addition to Ella and our two handsome male models, Nigel and Rufus, we also had another very special little star of the show. Ella’s bump!

Ella, a local producer, well known for her experience with mountain and moorland ponies, but working with ponies of all breeds, shapes and sizes. She is currently almost eight months pregnant and due to give birth to her first child at the end of June. I’ve been wanting to do a maternity/equine shoot for a while now and Ella was more than happy to help.

I went over to her beautiful, secluded yard in Layham, at the beginning of the week, where she keeps her production liveries and her own ponies. Ella had chosen two ponies from her show team, to star as the frontmen of this shoot.

First up was the beautiful, eleven year-old, traditional, Nigel. What a brilliant name!! And when I asked what his showname was, I was told that it was, of course, Mr. Nigel! Well, duh! Obviously, right? Nigel was such a great model. He was patient and gentlemanly and more than happy to strike a pose. And with his patchiness and all that silky mane and feather, he is totally my type!! 😀

Next up was Rufus. The little Fell stallion only began his showing career last year, just before Ella fell pregnant, after living a life of riley, running with mares on the Fells, and Ella has high hopes for him. ‘Lownthwaite Ribas’ as he is more formally known wasn’t as keen on his modelling debut as his co-star, Nigel and he definitely preferred the ridden shots to the boring ol’ in hand stuff, but luckily, he’s super handsome and I just couldn’t decide who I fell in love with more. Is this little stud-muffin not scrummy enough to eat?!

Ella says that she can’t wait for the baby to get here now and, being so active, ordinarily, she’s getting fed up with not being able to ride and do all of the things she would normally do in her day to day job. She also told me that she’s having a little baby girl, and that she hopes she is going to arrive wearing ribbons and ready for lead-rein classes, which I thought was brilliant. 😀

Thank you so much for having me, Ella. Also to Ella’s mum, for her helping hand, and to Nigel’s owners for getting him so sparkling white, ready for his close ups. Ella, I wish you all the luck with your new arrival.
