Last week, on a day that couldn’t decide whether to be sunny or stormy, I made my way to Margate, right up in the top corner of Kent, to visit Elaine and her quirky horse, Breeze.
We all know and accept that most horses have their own little quirks and foibles, things that make them them, that their owners learn to deal with and that can sometimes even make them all the more endearing to us, but Breeze’s eccentricities really made me laugh. This little horse definitely knows his own mind.
Elaine has had Breeze, her twenty-two year-old Arab cross, since he was just four years old. So he is certainly part of the family. Despite his stereotypically high-maintenance type, Breeze hasn’t worn a rug since he was just seven years-old and suffered an allergic reaction. And he hasn’t batted an eyelid. Typical man, perfectly happy in all of his naked glory. 😉
The funniest thing about Breeze is that he will not, under any circumstances leave his field, stable area or the school, unless he has a headcollar on. Elaine isn’t sure why he has developed this strange habit, but at least she can be rest assured that he will never become an expert escape artist. In fact, in the past when the bar that secures his stable area had come undone, Elaine arrived at the yard and feared that Breeze might have gotten loose. However, she found him cowering at the back of the stable, distraught that his area had been opened up. Bless his kooky little socks.
In addition to this, he won’t exit his stable and turn left. If you want him to go left, you have to lead him to the right, turn him around and walk him back past the stable.
“Breeze is definitely in charge here,” Shan, Elaine’s daughter, who purchased a photoshoot gift voucher for her Mum for Christmas, told me. And it seems that now he is of a more ‘mature’ age, Shan and Elaine a little more forgiving of his quirky ways. I bet that sounds pretty familiar to many of you with golden oldies. 🙂
In the past Breeze has turned his hoof to many different activities with both Elaine and Shan. He has competed in showjumping, dressage, completed pleasure rides, one day events and even given gymkhana a bash. But it seems he and Elaine are now enjoying a quieter life together and seem very happy doing so.
