Mob handed, Manja, her two sons, her friend Jenny and I made our way out to the field laden with a washing basket full of outfit choices, a saddle, boots, a mounting block, two dogs and one horse. We’d had a wander around and decided that the best location was a large field, with a beautiful tree, just at the back of the yard. So that was where we were headed, loaded up with photoshoot essentials.
Manja booked a shoot with her gorgeous ISH, Atlantic, back in June, as her birthday present, telling me “The photos on your Facebook page are lovely – even my non-horsey husband was impressed.”
We were super lucky with the beautiful weather, for our evening shoot and took full advantage of the setting sun filtering through the branches.
Manja has owned Atlantic for six years. She explained how the pair used to compete more than they do now, but between looking after her three children and suffering from pre-competition nerves, they nolonger get out and about as much as Manja would like to.
However, Manja clearly enjoys leisurely time spent with her handsome horse, all the same. And as long as Atlantic has something to eat, he is a happy chap. Manja explained that Atlantic is one of those horses that is ruled by his belly. And as soon as he realised that my ‘ears forward’ toys and tricks were not sweets and treats, he quickly lost interest. So we had to get fairly creative.
I absolutely love the images of Manja and Atlantic standing beneath the tree, with that enchanting sun flare peaking through, bathing everything in gold. This is one of many reasons why evening is my absolute favourite time to shoot!
